If you've watched celebrities twerking their bodies on TV, you may have wondered whether it's actually good for them. The scientific answer: Yes. ABC News interviewed an expert in exercise science, and we did more research so that you can learn the full benefits, including our musical tips for holistic benefits.
First, the physical health benefits: "Twerking is a combination movement involving a deep squat and a pelvic tilt," Michelle Olson, a professor of exercise science and a certified strength and conditioning coach at Auburn University in Montgomery, Ala., told ABC News.
"You take a wide stance with your legs turned out at 10 and 2 so your hips are externally rotated,” she said. “Then you pulse up and down as you thrust the pelvis bone forward and back.”
Because this booty dance works your entire body, it shapes and strengthens your derriere, thighs, hips, lower back and abs. In addition, it provides you with the stamina for functional activities such as carrying groceries.
Second, the mental health benefits. Whenever you learn a new activity, you enhance your cognition and memory, says Dr. Mehmet Oz. Whether you're 10 or 100, it's never too late to engage in a new activity that involves your body and mind. Just one caution if you're over 25, says Michelle Olson: Be cautious about overdoing it. Third, the calories burned benefits for those who want to whittle their waistlines. Because the movements resemble cardio or aerobic dance moves, you can burn about 120 calories in 15 minutes if you weigh 150 pounds. You'll burn more calories if you weigh more.
