How to enable parental controls on the iPhone and iPod Touch

Parental controls are found under the restrictions settings.

With the expanded parental controls offered by the iPhone OS 3.0, explicit and mature apps are coming to the iPhone app store, including those containing nudity. This makes it more important for parents to understand how to find and set up parental controls on the iPhone should they wish to restrict certain content.

Here is how to set up parental controls on the iPhone:

  1. Go to your iPhone settings. This is the icon with the gears.
  2. Touch the General menu item to get at general settings.
  3. Parental controls are under Restrictions. This menu item should be the last one on the first page of general settings.
  4. You first need to enable restrictions by touching where it says "Enable Restrictions" at the top.
  5. You will be prompted to enter a passcode. This passcode is what is used to override the settings and even turn the parental codes off, so it is best to choose something that you will remember, but your kids won't guess. (i.e. don't make it your kid's birth date.)
  6. You are now ready to set up the restictions.

Tips for setting up Parental Controls on the iPhone

The settings under "Allow" will let you turn on or off features of the iPhone or iPod Touch. For example, you can turn off YouTube completely or shut off access to the camera.

But you don't need to restrict total access to put control what is allowed on the iPhone. The settings under "Allowed Content" will let you restrict content based on ratings. For movies, these are the standard ratings: G, PG, PG-13, R and NC-17. For television, your choices are TV-Y, TV-Y7, TV-G, TV-PG, TV-14, TV-MA. And for Apps, you can choose 4 , 9 , 12 or 17 .

If you ever want to shut off parental controls, just return to the settings and touch where it says "Disable Restrictions". You'll be asked to tap in your passcode, and then the restrictions will be lifted.
