How to dress for evening events

Create a flawless event ensemble.

Huntsville’s events rarely have red carpets, but striving to look your best is part of any dressy affair.  Whether yours is a ball, fundraiser, cocktail party, a special dinner or even prom, flaunting it takes on a different meaning when it’s all about style.

Be inspired by red carpet style, but remember for every erstwhile starlet that gets it right, there are countless who don’t.  The latter usually fall into the category of reality personalities and those who achieve fame through questionable internet leaks.  In the end, while it garners the desired attention, it doesn’t really work.

For the uninitiated, let’s review what doesn’t work.  Without naming names, it boils down to wearing too many statement looks at once.  You’ve seen it.  Big hair, false eyelashes, with a body-conscious silhouette, a short hem and impossible platforms—too much flesh overall and no mystery.  Each of these alone can make for a finishing touch that takes an ensemble to the next level, but combined the result is tart-ish.

Creating a stand-out look is simple if you remember the importance of balance.  If a short hem is your thing (and it should be if you’ve got great legs) keep the silhouette easy and the top half of the dress should err on the side of modest.  The juxtaposition is intriguing, so skip the cleavage.  A full skirt can also balance a short hem while it accentuates your waist.

A simple short shift can support bold hair or makeup (not both) and sexy, statement-making shoes.  If your skirt is full or frilly, opt for a delicate and strappy heel and keep your hairstyle and makeup simple.

Want to show off your shoulders?  Opt for a strappy or strapless bodice. Keep the hemline longer to balance a deep décolletage or very bare top.  A full or A line skirt is the easiest silhouette to wear. Opt of a hemline that hits just above or right at the knee for a universally flattering length, although a midi skirt is a very modern way to balance bare shoulders.  A more body-conscious silhouette can be applied to this look, but keep the hemline longer and be sure that the fit is smooth and shows you to your best advantage.  Delicate shoes and classic pumps look best.  Choose a hairstyle that is very natural or a classic updo, like a bun or coiled braids to avoid looking costume-y.

As for body-con, it’s best in forgiving fabrics with some heft and little sheen. Worn in a flattering length (just above the knee) with vertical colorblocking it becomes a show-stopping combination with sophistication. Platform pumps work well with this look, as does a strappy heeled sandal.  The best finish is subdued hair and makeup, because the silhouette makes a bold statement.

Looking your best is easy if you opt for classic silhouettes and limit your style statements.  While each case stands alone and some rules are made to be broken, if you’re not sure, then breaking them probably isn’t for you.  Check out the slideshow for more inspiration from some of today’s tastemakers.
