How to cut your Chihuahua's nails

Whether you have a large or small dog, keeping the nails trim and neat is important for overall good health and well-being. If you start when your little guy is very young, it is a much easier process. Cutting the nails on the small dog should not be such a huge chore because of their wee size but this is not always the case. The friendly staff at your local Rockford-area Petsmart or Petco as listed below or one closest to your home has all you need to give your pet the perfect pedicure. They can also assist you in tips on how to safely trim the nails.

I have always found it easier to hold my Chihuahuas in my arms when trimming the nails. As you are holding your dog in your arms, use one of your hands to hold out the leg you are working on. It sometimes makes the little dog feel a bit more secure in your arms when clipping the nails. Just take the clippers and cut a small bit of the nail at a time at a 45 degree angle until you get them comfortably short without causing any bleeding. Rest assured, though, that your pup will not bleed endlessly if you do trim the nail a bit too short. Have some gel or powder handy that specific stops this type of problem. You can find quick stop at your larger pet supply store. In a pinch, you can use corn starch safely and effectively.

After clipping the nails, I use a nail grinder to file down any rough nails. With larger dogs, they grind their own nails down on rough surfaces, but small dogs seem to spend more time in arms, laps and inside the home. It is much safer for them and you to have the dog’s nails smooth and “scratch-free.”

It is not always easy to know how often to clip your dog’s nails and the small dog does not seem to have fast-growing nails. However, since we all seem to love, cuddle and snuggle with our little guys, trim and grind the nails as often as you can. It is safer and more fun for all concerned.
