It makes sense to have an "All Done" pocket or envelope on the picture schedule where your child can place pictures of tasks he or she has completed. This helps give them a sense of accomplishment, forward progress, and control throughout the day.

While some children are able to understand and work with a schedule that shows them their entire day at a glance -- particularly older school-age children -- others will benefit from keeping the schedule very simple, at least at first. The author was advised by an occupational therapist to begin with no more than three photos on the schedule at one time. Then gradually, add more steps to the schedule as your child is able to handle more information.

There is no right or wrong way to create and use a picture schedule. The important thing is to create a schedule that works for your child and your routines. You might decide to include a sticker reward system or put the pictures on a keychain, rather than on a board. You can use the pictures to let your pre-verbal child make choices of food, drink, activities or people and build a communication system that is a rewarding learning process.

The picture schedule, like other support tools, should be a positive experience for your autistic child and adapted to fit your family's unique needs.
