How to create a great Facebook business page

Facebook has been making many changes to its platform in the last few months.  It seems that daily the rules change and what you did last month may not work anymore.

Here are a few tips to help you create a great Facebook Page for your business.

Brand the Page – Name your page appropriately, the best option is to name the Page after your business.  This will ensure you are found in searches and will assist with SEO.  Facebook also allows Business Pages to create a custom URL, adding to SEO and branding.  The URL should match your business name or website address.  Once a custom URL is selected it cannot be changed, so choose an appropriate URL that will fit in with your current business name for SEO purposes.

Welcome Landing Page/Squeeze Page – Create a Welcome page that new visitors to your Facebook Page will land on when going to your Page.  The Page should “welcome” new visitors, explain a bit about what you do and have a clear call to action – “Click Like Above” and become a Friend of the Page.  “When you send people to your fan page and have them land on your Wall, your posts probably won’t be enough to entice them to ‘like’ you.” (Starr Hall, entrepreneur.com)

Engage your Friends – Get your Friends to interact with your Page.  The more Friends ‘like’ a post, comment on a status update or write on your wall the more other Facebook Users will see your Page name.  The average Facebook User has 130 Friends, if a Friend of your Page interacts with you this has the potential to be seen by their Friends.  Though getting people to interact is tough.  According to marketing expert Heidi Cohen, “Participation on most social media sites falls into the following categories: 90% of people lurk, 9% of people comment and 1% of people create content. Recent Forrester research reinforces this ratio.” Give them a reason to interact, create a promotion to award those who comment on your Page the most.

Content is King – Post great content on your Page.  Post consistently and enough to keep your updates in News Feeds.  90% of your posts should be informative content, content that informs about your business industry, top news stories, and fun information that people will stop to read.  (The other 10% hits your business and sales.)  Post your updates consistently, daily posts are recommended and post roughly the same time each day.

Deals/Discounts/Promotions – Offer Friends of your Facebook Page a coupon or deal only they can access.  Run a promotion and give away a discount or free product.  Keep them engaged with your Page, give them a reason to read your posts and visit your Page.  The best way to do this is to give them something.

Facebook Business Pages have become more like mini-extensions of your main website.  With the number of people on Facebook it is important to make your Page shine and stand ahead of the crowd and your competition.  With the right tools in place your Page can be a success.
