Nutrition and diet fads are everywhere, and it is hard for people to discern which ideas are actually true, and which ideas can be applied to their life. Some foods are just plain bad for you, and it is important to know how to choose foods that optimize your wellbeing; these ideas are very appealing and logical, and I believe they will help all people lead a better life.
Some foods are just not good for you; foods have been so processed and altered that they are now made up of words that no one can pronounce. "Noisy foods" that do not nourish your body can be detrimental to your health and wellbeing no matter how many diets you are on (Hemingway, 2007, p 33). These foods actually strain your body instead of nourishing it no matter how much you eat. "Sugars, chemicals, and caffeine" are polluting our bodies and not allowing us to actually listen to what our bodies tell us (Hemingway, 2007, p 35). I feel this is interesting and true, and although I was already aware of how these foods are not good for people ideas on them preventing the stillness required to listen to our bodies needs has had a strong impact on me. Changing my diet is an example of how action can bring stillness inside.
I am not ask you to stop eating the foods you like; I merely advice you to eat foods in moderation. It is important that you eat breakfast in the morning "because eating first thing in the morning will increase your metabolic rate and make you feel boosted in the body and mind" (Hemingway, 2007, p. 61). Stevia is a product that I recommend, stevia tastes just as good as regular sugar, but it is "calorie free"; for baking I also recommend "xylitol which sounds like a chemical but is actually red birch bark" (Hemingway, 2007, p 37). Whey protein powder is another product that I have tried, and I find that it is great in smoothies and dessert. Whey powder is made from milk, and it is a "powerful source of protein" (Hemingway, 2007, p 62). Coconut oil is a great replacement for other oils. It is "rich in the most beneficial kind of saturated fats, called medium-chain fatty acids, which have antimicrobial properties, are digested for quick energy, and boost your immune system" (Hemingway, 2007, p 62). Flaxseed powder is perfect for me because I do not like fish, and it contains omega-3 fats which are normally found in fish. It is also a "fantastic source of fiber", and flax seed can be bought in oil form as well (Hemingway, 2007, p 63). All of these foods are beneficial and important additions to my diet. I feel it is important to know what we are consuming, and I believe that making healthy choices about what I eat will enhance my happiness on all levels.
