The Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California (ICCNC) has announced a series of programs and other special events in celebration of the holy month of Ramadan, which begins on Monday, August 1, 2011. A helpful chart of prayer times for Ramadan 2011 has been created by the staff of the ICCNC and made available online for residents of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Although no classes will be held at the Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California during this holy month, daily programs and special events will be presented for members of the Islamic community, and also for members of the general public as part of the ICCNC’s interfaith outreach initiative.
These daily programs will include:
- Recitation of the Qur’an for adults and children, which will begin 45 minutes before sunset;
- Sunset (Maghrib) prayer;
- Breaking of the fast (Iftar);
- Lectures by Dr. Rahim Nobahar, Imam and Religious Director of the Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California; and
- Night (Isha) prayer.
In addition, the ICCNC will also host the following special programs for Laylatul Qadr (Nights of Destiny):
- 21st and 23rd of Ramadan, Nights of Measures and Martyrdom of Imam Ali (AS) presented by guest lecturer, Dr. Hamid Mavani, assistant professor of Religion and Islamic Studies at Claremont Graduate University, an active member of the interfaith community who has worked to promote civil society, religious pluralism, environmental ethics, and Islamic legal reform; and
- The Last Ten Nights of Ramadan, a series of events offering prayer, iftar, special duas, lectures in English, and other special programs.
Residents from across the Bay Area and Northern California are cordially invited to attend a special Open House Iftar event for the general public, which will begin on Saturday, August 13, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. People of all spiritual and personal growth traditions are welcome and sincerely encouraged to attend.
Participants at this Open House will have the opportunity to hear a recitation of the Qur’an, as well as a talk and panel discussion on Islamic spirituality that is sure to be of interest to many in the interfaith community. They will also be welcome to join in sunset prayer and Iftar (a dinner celebrating the breaking of the fast).
Organizers of this event are encouraging those planning on attending to also bring their friends, neighbors, co-workers, and anyone else who is interested in building a more compassionate and more understanding world. Planners also hope that this gathering will truly reflect the multicultural and spiritual diversity that defines the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California regions.
No special attire is required. To RSVP for this event, contact the Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California: (510) 832-7600, or info@iccnc.org.
