“We are all teachers for Christ,” declared Rev. Gilbert Guidry, Jr. in a recent sermon entitled “Testing, Teaching, and the Transfiguration,” taken from Mark 8:27 to 9:12. Speaking at the morning worship service at New Vision Christian Church, Pastor Guidry counseled that all Christians are teachers for Christ not only in what they say, but most importantly, in what they do.
The first step in manifesting one’s role as a teacher of Christ is to embrace Christ’s identity. To do so, explained Pastor Guidry, one has to know who Jesus is. “Jesus is more than a good teacher and a prophet,” declared Pastor Guidry. “Peter’s confession [“…thou are the Christ, the Son of the living God …”] must be our confession.”
The second step in being a teacher for Christ is to accept Christ’s sacrificial purpose. Christ gave his all to save humanity. “Christ demands the very life, even the soul, of those who would follow him,” preacher Pastor Guidry. “We must be willing to lay down our lives as Jesus’ disciples,” Guidry continued. He explained that laying down one’s life need not be limited to a physical death but a death to the influences of the world and the wiles of the Devil wherein one actually embodies the Christ spirit; therefore, living for others rather than for one’s self.
After achieving these first two critical steps, the true disciple will worship God in truth and in spirit through Jesus Christ. “Let Jesus the son of the Living God lead you to his Father,” said Pastor Guidry to a chorus of amens. Finally, “we must recognize Christ’s glory as he sits at the right side of God and embody that glory in our own lives,” counseled Pastor Guidry. “When we do that, people will see the Christ in us and come running asking what must I do to be saved,” concluded Pastor Guidry.
