It's officially summertime, Bay Area!

Before you waltz out to the beach or the park to get your tan on, it's important to know which beauty products you should use to help you stay safe while you're having fun in the sun.

Yes, we all think we "know" what sun-safety means, but many people don't practice what they have learned. Did you know that a new study from Brown University was the first to show "that experiencing just five blistering sunburns between the ages of 15 and 20 is enough to increase a person's risk of developing melanoma by 80 percent"?

Scary right?

But before you begin to freak out and want to stay inside all summer, why don't you learn how to properly protect yourself?

Instructors at the San Francisco Institute of Esthetics and Cosmetology- a Paul Mitchell partner school, held a workshop at their campus in San Francisco offering tips on "How to be a Safe Sun Goddess".

Yes, you can be a goddess while wearing sunscreen!

First topic of discussion: How to protect your hair from the sun?

SFIEC Future Professional Advisor, Becky Udwary, discussed how the sun's UV rays can turn healthy-shiny hair, into damaged, wiry and dry strands. Before you head out to the mall and grab yourself a Kentucky Derby-style hat, Udwary recommended products from Paul Mitchell's Sun Collection and Color Care Collection to protect your mane.

The Sun Collection consists of three products that all contain the SolarVeil™Complex. This complex is a powerful blend of sunflower extract and highly active UV absorbers. This combination shields fragile strands from damaging UVA and UVB rays. "The SolarVeil™ Complex helps lock in hair color and prevents fading to keep color vibrant," says Udwary.

First there's the Sun Recovery Hydrating Shampoo™It offers UV protection and is sulfate-free that "nourishes sun-struck strands, helps lock in hair color and leaves parched hair soft and silky."

Then there's the After-Sun Replenishing Masque®. The masque hydrates and also guards hair from UV rays to help prevent color fade. This product protects your hair before and after you're out in the sun.

Last but not least, there's the Sun Shield Conditioning Spray®. Spray this on and your strands are instantly soft. The conditioning spray helps maintain shiny hair color and provides UV protection.

Not only do these products protect your hair, but the Island Passion Flower scent, smells like a vacation. The only bummer is that these products come out in the summer only. However, there's always the Color Care Collection, which is offered year-round.

The Color Care Collection also offers sunflower extract and UV protection and has been a Paul Mitchell staple in salons for years. This collection contains four products, which are listed below.

Color Protect® Daily Shampoo: This shampoo gently cleanses color-treated hair and also moisturizers, strengthens and boosts shine. It not only shields hair from the sun, but also makes color last longer.

Color Protect® Daily Conditioner: Not only does this conditioner "leave hair looking and feeling soft and hydrated", but it also detangles while providing UVA and UVB protection to help color from fading.

Color Protect® Reconstructive Treatment: So you may have gone a little overboard and spent one too many days out in the sun without protecting your hair and you regularly use hot tools. This is where this treatment steps in. It repairs, conditions and hydrates color-treated hair, while also preventing damage and split ends. Another bonus? It "delivers an intense dose of UVA and UVB protection so color lasts longer."

Color Protect® Locking Spray: Similar to the Sun Shield Conditioning Spray®, it also offers "powerful UVA and UVB protection and helps prevent color fade." The spray locks in and extends the life of hair color as well.

Now that you have your hair and heads covered with UV protection, what about your skin?

SFIEC's Esthetics Learning Leader, Tara Parenti, taught the importance of not only using sunscreen, but finding the right one for your skin-type. Not only is sun-exposure dangerous, but also tanning beds."20 minutes in a tanning bed is equal to six days of sun exposure," says Parenti."

As a former instructor at Dermalogica, she displayed a few products from the brand that offer a good amount of SPF while also combating skin concerns.

It's important to remember that it doesn't matter what the weather is like outside, you should make wearing sunscreen a daily habit.

Depending on your skin concerns, Dermalogica has an array of moisturizers packed with sun protection.

For serious sun protection, there's the line's Daylight Defense line.

Dermalogica's Daylight Defense line was developed by the skin health experts at Dermalogica who researched the latest advances in SPF technology and skin care science, which ended up helping them create two products for skin exposed to daylight.

Protection 50 Sport SPF 50: "This sheer solar protection treatment defends against prolonged skin damage from UV light and environmental assault. The Oleosome Technology helps defend skin against the sun's damaging rays and keep skin hydrated. The lightweight formula helps neutralize damage and bind moisture to skin without a greasy after-feel." More great things about this product is that it is water-resistant.

After Sun Repair: Maybe you had a little too much fun in the sun and you're a little burnt. This cooling treatment balm helps "remedy damage from exposure to UV sunlight." It's a lightweight gel that helps calm skin and reduces irritation caused by sunburn. This balm also makes for a soothing post-waxing balm that cools and helps minimize redness. After Sun Repair also moisturizes the skin to help shorten recovery time while calming extracts soothe and refresh.

If you're looking to protect your skin while also looking for anti-aging benefits, the brand's Age Smart line offers two products perfect for you.

Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 50: This moisturizer is described as a "forming, emollient moisturizer". What does that mean exactly? Well, it helps minimize skin-aging triggers with the help of the SPF 50. To get scientific, the "patented oleosome encapsulation technology boosts sunscreen effectiveness for critical protection against UV rays, while a unique polypeptide helps encourage collagen-producing activities." So basically, it protects your skin from the sun while also fighting the signs of aging.

Skin Perfect Primer SPF 30: Let's say you already have a caboodle full of skincare products and you're looking to condense it. This is the perfect product for you- hence the word "perfect" in the product's name. This product not only smoothes away fine-lines, but also offers key sun-protection and is a great way to prep your skin before you apply your makeup. This primer contains silicones combined with soy protein to even out skin texture. The "natural minerals provide a neutral tint to balance skin tone and enhance luminosity and radiance."

If you're skin is more of the sensitive type, there are a couple of good products for you that will not only be gentle, but will effectively protect you from the sun.

Ultra Sensitive Tint SPF 30: This natural mineral sunscreen helps protect against "photodamage and UV exposure, and the exclusive UltraCalmingTM Complex helps minimize discomfort, burning and itching." It also has a tint that provides minimal coverage.

Super Sensitive Shield SPF 30: If your skin is very sensitive, or if you just got a peel, this product is your best friend. This is also a natural mineral sunscreen but it also contains and "UltraCalmingTM Complex with Oat and botanical actives to help minimize discomfort, burning and itching. " This combination provides hydration and "helps protect and reinforce barrier lipids, which are often compromised in sensitized skin conditions."

Redness Relief SPF 20: Don't be alarmed when you put this on and the product is green. It's meant to be to counter redness, but on the plus side...also contains SPF 20.

If anti-aging isn't a concern for you and your skin isn't sensitive. There are still plenty more options.

For those with oily and acne-prone skin, there's a perfect product for you as well.

Oil Free Matte SPF 30: This is a oil-free sunscreen that helps prevent shine and maintains an all-day matte finish. Usually, people with oily skin are afraid of sunscreens because they're heavy and cause even more breakouts. The ingredients in this product not only keep oil at bay, but also helps keep skin clear.

Looking to brighten your complexion? Try Purelight.

Purelight SPF 30: This is a medium-weight daytime moisturizer with SPF that brightens and shields against pigment-inducing UV light. It also contains" a blend of peptides, minerals and botanical extracts to help treat and prevent cellular discoloration for unsurpassed skin brightening and tonal balancing." Talk about a sunscreen and moisturizer for a specific type.

If you're not looking for anything too fancy, there are a couple of products that just offer necessary protection and are convenient for your vanity. Those are:

Sheer tint SPF 20: Similar to its ultra sensitive counterpart, this product comes in different shades that offer sun protection, moisture and a light tint. Perfect for those hot summer days when wearing a full-face of makeup just won't do.

Solar Defense Booster SPF 50: You may already have a moisturizer you love but it might not contain any or little SPF. This booster adds a little oomph to your favorite.

With all of the products mentioned, there's no reason as to why you shouldn't be protecting your skin this summer.

Now, go 'head and be a "Safe Sun Goddess"!
