Over the summer makeup looks tend to be more natural as women everywhere want a healthy flush and dewy, glowing skin. Unfortunately, this seemingly simple look can be difficult to achieve. Enter Janeena Billera, glo minerals National Makeup Artist who provided us with tips and tricks to obtain a flawless flush just in time for the dog days of summer.
It seems like more and more people are focusing on complexion rather than a bold eye or lip - do you think this is a new trend?
Skin is on trend! A beautiful complexion has always been a beauty must, but that dewy, barefaced, natural complexion has definitely taken a front row seat this season.
How can you select the perfect blush for your skintone? Are some colors better suited to certain complexions?
Selecting the perfect blush can get a bit tricky. It is always best to choose a blush based on your undertone, and complexion color. I find for fairer skin (which tends to have a blue undertone) that more of a soft, peachy-pink hue will give a natural, sunkissed look to the face, while a more olive undertone can go with either the peaches or soft pinks, giving the skin a more lit from within appearance. For deeper complexions bright and bold colors like hot pink, orange, deep currant and vibrant gold will enhance the skin giving it depth as well as a natural highlight.
Are there any colors that are universally flattering?
Blushes that have a mix of cool and warm undertones such as a coral pink with a touch of gold are universally flattering.
How do you apply blush perfectly without it looking clownish or over the top?
It's all about the brush and placement. I personally like to use a large, fluffy blush brush so that the color is evenly dispersed throughout the apples of the checks moving on up towards the temple. Plus, it gives a beautiful airbrushed look to the skin.
Can you provide steps for a perfect summery makeup look with blush as the star of the show?
Summer is all about simplicity- less is more! Anyone who knows me knows I love cream blush. A well formulated cream blush can act as a multi-purpose product. For a perfect, lightweight, airy summer look, I apply a seamless, luminescent foundation or tinted moisturizer followed by a light application of cream blush on the cheeks as well as on the lips, a swipe of a skin tone shimmered eye shadow across the lid and a generous amount of mascara to finish off the look. This way the skin is the focal point, and pops of fresh color have been introduced in a natural and minimalistic way.
