In the seventh generation of video game consoles, there are three primary systems that are in place. The Wii, PlayStation 3, and the Xbox 360 are the consoles that make up that generation. Of course, there are hand-held systems that exist like the Nintendo DS and PSP. As far as the Wii being able to compete, it can and has done so in different aspects.
In order to answer this question, it’s best to look at different portions of each of the consoles as main aspects. If they are not looked at all and just focused mainly on graphics, then it can be easy to have the answer saying no.
The only part that the Wii cannot compete has to do with the graphics department. Both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are the leaders in that department. They are the ones with the graphics that are better admittedly. The Wii wasn’t focused on that aspect at all. As a matter of fact, it does come across as Nintendo has never put a huge emphasis on graphics being the dominate factor in a good console. To summarize it up, the Wii cannot compete graphically whatsoever because it probably isn’t or wasn’t the primary focus whatsoever.
As far as the games go, there is definite competition. Each has games that stand out that are exclusive. Nintendo has games like Super Mario Bros., Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Super Smash Bros., Kirby, and others as it is a symbol of what they have to offer. Microsoft has perhaps its biggest one being Halo as far as exclusive.
Innovation wise, there is a competition. Nintendo is more known for innovating and creating new ways to play video games. Because of the success of the Wii, the Xbox 360 has the Kinect and there is also the PlayStation Move.
In conclusion, there is a way for the Wii to compete. It may not be much in the way of the graphics department but it is there in terms of other aspects. Games are an aspect that has direct competition and also a very big factor in a console’s success. If there are enough good games, then it makes buying the console a lot easier than one that doesn’t have much of a variety. There are features so it does compete that way as well. Innovation is a way of competition in that of trying to create something new that nobody else is doing of the major consoles. Based upon those qualifications, it does compete but just in other aspects.
