How the U.S. should deal with the Muslim Brotherhood

Muslim reformer Dr. Tawfik Hamid recently created a multipoint memo addressing the problems with the Muslim Brotherhood, who are quickly rising to power in Egypt, where MB spokesmen have stated they will impose sharia law.

Among other things, Dr. Hamid says:

The Muslim Brotherhood does not seem to be as violent as all-Qaeda. However, it is hard to completely separate them from the phenomenon of Radical Islam. The word they use for their slogan is "Wa-aidou" which is Arabic for "prepare." This is taken from verse 8:60 of the Quran which states, "Prepare (Wa-aidou) against them (the Un-believers) to the utmost of your power, including steeds of war, to strike terror into (the hearts of) the enemies of Allah and your enemies, and others besides, whom ye may not know, but whom Allah doth know."  Therefore, the use of "Wa-aidou" underneath the two swords in the MB flag indicates this is much more complex word than many can imagine.

The pertinent part here bears repeating:

"Verse 8:60 of the Quran states, 'Prepare (Wa-aidou) against them (the Un-believers) to the utmost of your power, including steeds of war, to strike terror into (the hearts of) the enemies of Allah...'"

By his own description, Hamid is a former "radical Muslim" or Muslim extremist who was knows the workings of the Muslim Brotherhood very well. His biography reads:

Dr. Tawfik Hamid (aka Tarek Abdelhamid), is an Islamic thinker and reformer, and one time Islamic extremist from Egypt. He was a member of a terrorist Islamic organization JI with Dr. Ayman Al-Zawaherri who became later on the second in command of Al-Qaeda. Dr. Hamid is currently a Senior Fellow and Chair of the study of Islamic Radicalism at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies.
