OK, I can hear the grumbling now. Real men don’t drink sweetened vodka. To which I say, riddle me this. Have you ever had late-harvest Johannesburg Riesling with a fall dessert? Would you kick a bottle of Chateau d’Yquem off the table?
I have to admit, I was in a good mood when the offer to try Smirnoff’s two new flavored dessert vodkas — one flavored with wild honey, the other “cinna-sugar twist” — came over the transom. I’m here to tell you that they are perfect meal-toppers now that days have grown shorter and a tad chillier and are apt to have a place on my dinner table once the snow flies.
I also received some recipes for cocktails using these elixirs, which I will share with you in an upcoming column. For now, suffice it to say the Wild Honey variant goes down well in the company of strong black coffee and equally on its own. The Cinna-Sugar Twist is terrific drizzled on vanilla bean ice cream and a perfect match for apple pie.
Each sells for $15.99 (MSRP) the 750mL bottle and is 60 proof. They are part of a line of flavored vodka by Smirnoff that include Iced Cake, Kissed Caramel, Whipped Cream, Sorbet Light Lemon, and Passion Fruit.
Back shortly with those cocktails. Cheers!
