How one puppy helped save a toddler

Telkwa, BC - Tika, a 4 month-old Border collie, has been an exceptionally smart dog since the day that her family brought her home.

But this clever puppy proved just how incredibly special she is back on September 11, 2011 - the day that she helped save her human brother, Brady.

On that fateful day, the 21 month old toddler was sleeping soundly in a tent trailer.

His family was visiting relatives on Tyhee Lake at the time.

Around 10:45 that morning, Brady's father checked on the slumbering boy - at the time that he checked in, Brady was still peacefully sleeping.

Brady's dad went back into the house to join the other family members for a cup of coffee and conversation before it was time to pack up and head back towards home.

Little did Brady's family know that the child had woken up after the late morning check-in.

Though Brady had never before climbed out of his playpen - for some reason, on this day, he did.

The toddler's parents were alerted to a problem a short time later when Tika began to bark.

When Brady's father went to investigate, the frantic puppy ran directly to the trailer.

That's when it became apparent that something was dreadfully wrong. The door to the tent trailer was open and the little boy was nowhere to be found.

Everyone sprang into action - frantically searching around the house and trailer. Tika, who was leashed, had ideas of her own.

The puppy dragged her guardian directly to the lake; it was there that a horrifying sight greeted the distraught familly.

Little Brady was under the water.

What ensued was a desperate attempt at CPR and warming the unconcious baby.

The local Telkwa Fire Department was contacted and first responders quickly arrived to the desperate scene.

Brady was taken to a local hospital, stabilized and then flown to the BC Children's Hospital in Vancouver.

Miraculously, the young boy recovered with no lasting effects from his time under water.

His family is eternally grateful to the first responders and medical team - but most of all, they are grateful for the puppy who not only alerted them to their missing son, but led them directly to the spot where he had fallen into the water.

Good girl Tika!!
