Across the globe, people will celebrate the arrival of 2012, the New Year. At midnight on January 31, 2011, individuals will have diverse festivities, as people will cheer. At Times Square in New York City, an enthusiastic crowd will gather and participate in the countdown as the crystal ball drops. With the New Year arriving, some people will even make New Year's resolutions to improve their lives. A New Year has almost begun. How time flies!
Newarkers have their own special way of telling time. There is a majestic clocktower at Newark Broad Street Station that is 80 feet tall, which is located in Newark, New Jersey. Newark Broad Street Station was built between 1902 and 1903.
According to a booklet published by NJ Transit in 2007, the Newark Broad Street Station, formerly called the Delaware, Lackawanna &Western Railroad, was built because of an accident. When a trolley with poor working brakes was cut in half by a speeding locomotive, nine students died and 30 people were injured on February 19, 1903. After the tragedy, the Broad Street Station was created to provide safety for all.
Today commuters still use the Broad Street Station, the oldest train station in Newark, to go to work or to travel for pleasure. In 1984, the station was listed in the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places. The striking tower, with an elegant clock dial, can be seen from a distance.
