With an outpouring of emotional and financial support coming from the people of this great nation, I began to ask myself one question. Exactly how much money has been donated by us in relief efforts for the people of Haiti after this tragic disaster?
Well, that answer is certainly difficult to pinpoint, so I have found some estimates.
According to reliefweb.int, by January 22, Americans have poured out nearly $180,000,000 for the welfare of our neighbors to the south. Including all those who live here illegally, that is approximately $0.58 per person. That seems like a small number, but when you take into context the number of people who are unemployed, underemployed, not on the books at all, or just too broke to help with more then maybe a prayer, that number would rise significantly.
So what's my point? Simple. Even during these harsh economic times, when people fear about whether they will even have a job tomorrow, and when we are being taxed to death, the hearts of Americans still can't help but to reach out to those in need.
So then, do we really need government handouts? Imagine, if you will, if our taxes actually went where they were supposed to go, and were appropriated properly. In other words, imagine if our federal tax dollars went to pay for the military, and the pay of the government as outlined in the Constitution. Then, imagine if the state taxes went to paying for, well, roads, which really is the only thing that is appropriated properly through our state taxes.
In this world, we would all, corporations and people alike, have so much extra money, that one, corporations would be able to hire more people, and for more money, and two, anyone in need would be well taken care of by their local churches and privately owned community centers, along with neighbors and friends. And, we would still have more then enough money to spend the way we Americans like to spend, and help foreigners, the way we like to help.
Isn't that the real American dream? Prosperity for all, because of a lack of government. And now, we have prosperity for some, because of the full onslaught of government.
While this is my opinion, ask yourself if you think this makes sense. Does it make sense to have a nation in prosperity, of people who help each other, and help those who are less fortunate then us in other nations, simply because we want to, and not because we have to?
