According to Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission (MADACC) the list of the maximum number of animals allowed to be kept in a private home varies in each community.
Most areas allow three animals. River Hills has no restrictions. Oak Creek allows two dogs and no limit to the number of cats. A full listing can be found on the MADACC website.
For those families who find that they have more than the legal limit of animals in their home the Department of Neighborhood Services offers an Animal Fanciers permit which allows up to five dogs and five cats to reside in the home.
A rule of thumb for deciding the animal population of your home is the ability to care for them. All animals need available water, food and clean quarters. They must have room to move around. The owner must provide each animal attention and most of them need jobs. Dogs need to be walked twice a day and have an exercise area. Cats need climbing posts, hiding places and scratching posts. Horses need about an acre per horse. The more animals owned the more time consuming.
If the family feels they have too many animals the best alternative is to surrender them to the Wisconsin Humane Society, Second Hand Purrs Cat Shelter or any of the dog and cat breed rescue organization in the Milwaukee area.
