It is often said that history is cyclical; that those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it.
When my father was my age, the war in Vietnam was just kicking into high gear. As a socialist Democrat began to smash that country to pieces from the air, a common protest heard at the time went "Hey, hey, LBJ! How many kids did you kil today?"
Oh how history truly does repeat itself. Take, for example, a recent US drone strike that vaporized nine children in Afghanistan as they were collecting firewood. Now my generation is witnessing a socialist Democrat rain death and destruction on an Asian country, and is now launching cruise missiles in North Africa in the classic America way: against a country that did not threaten us, attack us, and can not fight back.
Although it is much, much less acceptable now to publicly claim that Caesar has no clothes and should be held accountable for the bloodshed, thankfully there is still some radical dissent against the imperial welfare-warfare state. Writes James Bovard:
According to some Obama supporters, the U.S. bombing of Libya is a self-evident triumph of good over evil.
Why? Because we’re the good guys, and Obama said the people the U.S. is killing are bad guys.
Defense Secretary Gates has become indignant at the suggestion that the U.S. bombing is killing a significant number of Libyan civilians. That is impossible, because Obama is pure-hearted.
It will be entertaining to watch pro-war liberals struggle to justify killing Libyans (civilian and otherwise) in the coming days/weeks/months.
UPDATE: The socialist Republicans are also to be blamed for this madness, of course. When they were in power, they advocated and apologized for Bush's centralization of power. And just weeks after they were hailing their spending "cuts," it turns out the US blitkreig of Libya could cancel those cuts out. I except the GOP to denounce the massive government spending that is required to carry out this war anyday now.
