Generation after generation, individuals of the stature and acumen of Albert Schweitzer appear on the world scene and leave an indelible legacy for decades and even centuries. Born this day, January 14, 1875, by the time of his death on September 4, 1965, Albert Schweitzer was a doctor and surgeon in a hospital (his hospital, actually), pastor of a congregation, administrator of a village (yes, a village in Africa), a theologian and scholar, a writer, an accomplished musician and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate for 1952.
Schweitzer was born into a family which had been devoted to religion, education and music for generations. With the same passion, he also became a missionary in Africa, established a leprosarium and lived with the poor and when he died, he was buried there in Africa.
There may not be similar high profile candidates for such accomplishments in Cincinnati. But what made Albert Schweitzer what he became was his passion and devotion to the causes he pursued.
In this regard, there are many in the Greater Cincinnati area who deserve credit and recognition. Many give their time, talent and treasure to serve fellow human beings and God. They are progenies of different backgrounds: men, women, young and old – the unsung heroes who labor tirelessly to make a difference in other peoples’ lives.
A birthday of an extraordinary individual like Albert Schweitzer serves as a reminder of the devotion and dedication of those selfless thousands in the community.
