According to the independently operated Aneki.com, a website that “serves as a comprehensive source of continental and world rankings,” Kansas City ranks 9th in the country’s top 25 fattest cities. By msn.com's latest calculation, we're ranked 6th in the top ten. With obesity being the epidemic that it is, this isn’t a statistic we can ignore.
It’s not just a superficial issue. A few problem pounds here and there aren’t that big of a deal, but when your health and ability to be active are affected, something must be done. Maybe it’s all the Gates and Arthur Bryant’s. Maybe it’s all the yummy restaurants on the Plaza. Whatever it is, it’s a serious issue, because couples and families are suffering.
There is no need to quote stats here. We all know obesity increases our chances of health-related illnesses like heart disease and high blood pressure. We also know it makes it harder, or even impossible, to lead an active lifestyle, which (of course) is important for health reasons, but is also important for marital reasons.
Exercise is like a natural drug. It helps relieve stress and improves your mood by releasing endorphins. When couples do it together, they are able to feel good together. They experience the “endorphin rush” together. This is a wonderful shared experience that can only benefit your marriage.
Couples who are looking to conceive may also be struggling because of weight. Obesity can significantly affect a woman’s ability to get pregnant. Sometimes, losing as little as 20 pounds can be the difference between trying to conceive and actually getting pregnant.
When couples are dating, they often take extra time to look good for each other. Once they get married, though, that extra effort goes out the window. Though few people realize it, letting yourself go after marriage sends the message, “I don’t care about how I look, and I don’t care what you think about how I look.” The opposite should be true. Now that you’re married and have a permanent connection to that person, there is even more of a reason to look good. You should want to let them know how much you appreciate and love being with them. Getting in shape is a wonderful way to do that. It can bring that “spark” back (if you’ve lost it) and kick your confidence up a notch or two.
Many complain that getting in shape is too hard and too time consuming, but that’s just an excuse those that aren’t truly motivated use. If you really want it, you find a way to make it happen, period. This is the attitude we take with things that are truly important to us, and it’s the attitude you should take about weight loss.
If you’re low on time, working out with a fitness DVD or any of the shows from Fit TV may be the best for you, but if you and your honey want to get out of the house, there are a variety of options:
3100 Broadway St, #1020, Kansas City, MO
24 Hour Fitness
8600 Ward Pky, Ste 7, Kansas City, MO
323 E Gregory Blvd, Kansas City, MO
Center States Tai Chi Chuan
111 E Gregory Blvd, Kansas City, MO
Kwanzaa Martial Arts
8238 E Bannister Rd, Kansas City, MO
215 W 18th St, Ste 200, Kansas City, MO
FIMB Yoga and Wellness Center
858 Sw Blue Pky, Lee's Summit, MO
And of course, if you don’t have the money to pay for any of these options, just move. It doesn’t matter if you walk around the block, dance around your house to the radio, and go up and down the stairs of your office 20 times. As long as you’re burning more calories than you’re taking in, the pounds have no choice but to melt away.
Sending beautiful energy your way,
