"How I Met Your Mother" season 9 continued Monday, Oct. 7, with episode 4, "The Broken Code," and it was an episode that was just all around weird as Barney took out his frustrations on Ted after his best man's confession, Lily made a MarshPillow 2.0, and Robin realized she had no female friends.
Friday 3 p.m., 51 hours before the wedding
Breaking the bro code This "HIMYM" episode picked up right where the last one left off, as Barney revealed that he had in fact showed up at the carousel only to see Robin and Ted holding hands. Ted insisted it was nothing, just a friend comforting a friend, and Barney was all cool about it. No problem, right? Wrong! Barney had Ted do all these things as his best man—rewrite table cards twice, move to the inn's dungeon (seriously, what was with that room?) for his "great aunt" who didn't exist, babysit wedding doves—and then he revealed that he had replaced him as best man, with William Zabka. Yes, Barney was mad. "Holding hands is like the 4th grade equivalent of banging," he explained. "You broke the bro-code." "A bro shall not have a weird moment with another bro's fiancée," Barney declared, launching into another fake history lesson.
Marshall was their referee via Skype, and he had them recreate the moment to see if it would be weird. It was weird. It was very weird. The entire episode was weird, yet we couldn't look away. So Barney admitted that he was really mad at himself for not showing up sooner to help Robin, but then Ted admitted that he still had feelings for her, and he couldn't just turn them off like he wanted. Ted ended up swearing he'd try to move on on the Bro Code, and in the end, he was once again Barney's best man. But Billy was coming for him because apparently he was either suddenly such good friends with Barney he wanted to be his best man that badly or he had some weird thing about loving wedding and being the best man. Who knows, it was weird.
Still road tripping Yes, Marshall was still road tripping to try to make it back for the rehearsal dinner, but he was determined not to miss out on anything as he actually was in a decent amount of this episode thanks to Lily's MarshPillow 2.0. Its head was a tablet, so Marshall could stay caught up, freeze at awkward times, and play judge for his friends. Hopefully his storyline gets more interesting when he finally gets to the wedding because it hasn't been for a while now.
Girl problems Robin thought Lily had just not bothered with her bachelorette party when no one else showed up, but it turned out that Robin just didn't have any other female friends to invite ("You hate women, and women hate you," she explained)—and Robin didn't exactly help matters since she had no idea how to talk to women. But when Robin did find a friend at the bar to talk sports, Lily went crazy, flipped out on the girl, and Lily and Robin realized that no other girl could be their friend because they're both insane.
