How I Met Your Mother kicked off its seventh season with "The Best Man" on Monday, September 19 at 8PM on CBS 2 in Queens. The gang attended two weddings—one in the present, where Lily kept her pregnancy a secret—and Barney's in the future.
Timing is very important, and it was all because of Barney's wedding that Ted met his bride. Ted had to calm Barney down as he got pre-wedding jitters and reminded him that Punchy's wedding was the worst ever. Ted worked very hard on his toast since he didn't have a history of good toasts. Barney told him he should point out that he was on a magazine cover, but Robin said he wasn't one to talk because of the Nora situation. Meanwhile, Lily and Marshall found out they're having a baby but doing their best to keep it a secret.
At the wedding, Barney was on the prowl and Marshall was drinking for two to keep the pregnancy secret. Barney tried out a bunch of different pick-up lines that were bad decisions. Lily realized that Robin still had feelings for Barney, who was taking polls of why his pick-up lines weren't working. Ted found out that everyone was rooting for Ted to melt down yet again at the wedding, and Barney told him to shamelessly plug himself. Marshall stepped in and fortunately didn't ruin the wedding by hitting Kelly in the face with a football. Marshall did start bragging about Ted until he noticed a cute baby and pushed Ted's accomplishment aside.
Meanwhile, Robin tried to convince Lily there was no chemistry left between them and to do so, they took to the dance floor and things ended with them standing very close. His phone ringing interrupted them—it was Nora.

Barney wanted Robin to help him, and using the words she wanted to tell Barney herself, she did. Marshall wanted to spill the beans about their pregnancy, and Lily agreed once she held a cute baby. Robin joined Ted outside to smoke cigars, and he talked about how his friends were married with families while he was alone and no longer thinking about his outlook about destiny. He stopped believing like he used to, and she told him to start again. She said that with chemistry, all you need is timing. They still had their 40-deal.
Lily, Marshall, and Barney joined them outside, and Lily spilled about her pregnancy. Ted was once again crying while delivering a toast, and Marshall grabbed the microphone and pointed to Lily announcing the pregnancy. However, Kelly thought he was pointing to her and announced her pregnancy, starting what caused it to be the worst ever.
Back in the future, Barney knew he picked the right "tie" and that Ted would cry during the toast. Lily joined them and said the bride wanted to see Ted, and then questioned Barney's tie choice.
