'How I Met Your Mother' spin-off with Meg Ryan predicted to flop

I know what you're thinking. How could you possibly say that after the heart-felt series finale that left most of us teary-eyed? Perhaps the word "flop" may be a bit of an overstatement, but hear me out. As big a fan as I am of the show, intuition tells this critic that HIMYM's spin-off "How I Met Your Dad" narrated by Meg Ryan will never quite compare to its beloved predecessor--even if the writers combine elements from all of Meg Ryan's most popular romantic comedy films.

E! Online theorizes that the "How I Met Your Mother" spin-off is actually "When Harry Met Sally," but I predict that a quest for love from the perspective of a divorced, thirty-something woman won't be nearly as entertaining as that of a single, thirty-something man... unless, of course, you've got the cast of "Bridesmaids" to back it up because that is what it's going to take to sustain the interest of HIMYM's cult-following. Here are just a few reasons why the "How I Met Your Mother" spin-off may have set itself up for failure from the get-go.

An unimpressive cast

When the pilot episode of HIMYM first aired, it had a very promising cast including Neil Patrick Harris ("Harold and Kumar"), Alyson Hannigan ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer") and Jason Segel ("Forgetting Sarah Marshall"). The cast of the pilot episode of HIMYD includes Greta Gerwig ("Frances Ha") playing Sally, the female version of Ted; Anders Holm ("Workaholics") playing Sally's soon-to-be ex-husband Gavin; Tiya Sircar ("The Internship") playing the role of Sally's best friend Juliet, and Nicholas D'Agosto ("Masters of Sex") playing Frank, Sally's potential love interest turned friend. The spin-off cast is not nearly as impressive in comparison, but if the spin-off is well-received, then it could very well be a big break for all of these stars.

The ultimate wingwoman

I think most everyone can agree that "How I Met Your Mother" would never have been the same without Neil Patrick Harrison playing the role of Barney Stinson. Some fans might even argue that Barney Stinson was the show. Afterall, one of its central themes revolved around all the sleazy dating schemes Barney could come up with to get women in bed without having to make a commitment. Barney even had his own blog and wrote "The Playbook" guide for picking up women. If you ask this critic, Tiya Sircar was a poor choice to play the role of Sally's best friend. Whitney Cummings or Kristen Wiig would have made a far better choice. Can't you just picture either one of them saying to Sally, "Slut up!" a la Barney Stinson's notorious "Suit up!" quote? Exactly.

A TV icon for a narrator

Bob Saget as the voice of future Ted made sense, especially since he played the role of Danny Tanner, one of America's most popular TV dads of the 80s. He also hosted "America's Funniest Home Videos," a long-standing family favorite, for more than two decades. Though an iconic figure in her own right, Entertainment Weekly reports "How I Met Your Dad" will actually be Meg Ryan's prime-time television debut as the show's narrator. Studio execs have neither denied nor confirmed media rumors regarding Meg Ryan's involvement, which means there's still a chance for your favorite iconic TV mom to fill the narrator role, perhaps maybe Katey Sagal who played Peggy Bundy in "Married With Children," or even Alex Borstein, the voice of Lois Griffin from "Family Guy."
