Cobie Smulders, known to millions as Robin Scherbatsky on "How I Met Your Mother," is now the frontrunner to play the sidekick to Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury in "Marvel Studio's The Avengers." Deadline Hollywood reports the the Canadian actress has moved to the head of the line which includes 'V's' Morena Baccarin, Jessica Lucas and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
The startlingly beautiful Smulders is not unknown to "Avengers" helmer Joss Whedon. She was reportedly one of his top candidates for the "Wonder Woman" lead when Whedon was attached to that project.
Smulders would be playing S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill, a character who would be new to the Marvel Studios movies. She is, however, well-established in Marvel Comics. Not a completely sympathetic character, Hill was a ruthless interim director of S.H.I.E.L.D., not above occasional blackmail to get her way. The rest of the cast is stellar. Robert Downey, Jr. will return as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth will be on board in their roles as Steve Rogers, aka Captain America and Thor, respectively (their debut movies both open this summer), Scarlett Johannson reprises her role as The Black Widow, Mark Ruffalo replaces Edward Norton as Dr. Bruce Banner, aka The Incredible Hulk, and Jeremy Renner joins the cast as the archer Hawkeye. Clark Gregg, who played S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson in the "Iron Man" movies (and the upcoming "Thor") is also back for the superhero All-Star Game.
"Marvel Studios' The Avengers" is scheduled to start production this April, and will be released May 4, 2012.
