"How I Met Your Mother" explored the fine line between love and obsession in the Monday, Feb. 4 episode, 815, "P.S. I Love You," best put in Barney's words: "It's Robin Sparkles 4, y'all!"
Yes, "HIMYM" brought back Robin Sparkles, and if this was the last time we see her, well, it was perfect. Once Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) learned that Robin (Cobie Smulders) had been a stalker (we're talking filling up journals and a restraining order) when the gang was talking about the Dobler-Dahmer theory, he became obsessed himself, broke into her apartment to find her journals, and flew to Canada to talk to her ex-boyfriends (donuts at Tim Horton's get you a long way). It was Simon (James Van Der Beek) who told Barney about Robin Sparkles on "Underneath the Tunes" and mentioned the Gray Bowl (Canada's Super Bowl), and Barney brought the tape back with him, leading to the others to be crazy-excited. "We're all terrible people," Ted (Josh Radnor) said as they watched. "Turn it up." Apparently all that touring got to be too much for Robin Sparkles, and she cracked ("Even when Canadians are mean, they're polite," Lily remarked). Her last song, "P.S. I Love You," was so dark that the record company refused to release it and only a few people had seen the video—but it was part of the documentary and under the name Robin Daggers, which she also used when she performed at the halftime show of Canada's Super Bowl. Barney thought she was singing about Alan Thicke and ended up with a black eye—and he was wrong. (Thicke was also wrong and it was not Dave Coulier). After Barney admitted anyone could get obsessed, Robin admitted the song was about Paul Shaffer. And when Barney said he was a total Dahmer, Robin told him, "But you're my Dahmer, which makes you a Dobler," and kissed him.
Meanwhile, Ted's "meet-cute" with Jeanette (Abby Elliot) wasn't so much a "meet-cute" as a "stalk-crazy," as Lily put it, as her story went from conveniently being there when a fire alarm went off to her setting a fire to set off the alarm to the reveal that she had been stalking him since he was on the cover of New York Magazine. They didn't just happen to be reading the same book like he thought. But everyone needs one last horrible mistake before the woman they're going to marry, and Jeanette was Ted's. But really, Ted needs to get his act together soon to be the guy ready for what we've been seeing in the future.
Finally, we learned that Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily's (Alyson Hannigan) "meet-cute" wasn't exactly a "meet-cute" either; she had seen him at orientation and needed an excuse to meet him, so she made one. But Marshall still loved it, so she was on the Dobler end of the "Dobler-Dahmer scale."
