"How I Met Your Mother" season 9 continued with episode 3, "Last Time in New York," Monday, Sept. 30. Barney and Robin's relatives arrived, while Lily found out Ted had a list of things he wanted to do in New York before leaving. But it was the final moment that will have everyone talking.
Friday 2 p.m. 52 hours before the wedding
The Walking Old Barney and Robin's relatives arrived at the inn for the big "HIMYM" wedding weekend, and worried about becoming a sex-less, fighting couple when they were their age, the couple tried to find somewhere to have sex while avoiding their families. (But they had to be careful about what they said, like buffet and Mandy Patinkin, because those words attracted old people.) James sacrificed himself to give them an early wedding present, and while the couple scouted places to have sex, Robin found Ted and Lily—and Ted's list. However, Lily claimed it was hers, and fortunately, Barney called Robin before it could all fall apart. Unfortunately, Barney and Robin walked in on old people sex, and while they were disgusted, it was followed by a sweet moment. "In 60 years, that'll be us, right?" He asked, and she agreed. So with a "Mandy Patinkin," they greeted their relatives as they flocked around them.
[Side note: Robin may have to resign herself to having a ring bear because it doesn't seem like Barney's dropping that.]
The long road trip Marshall and Daphne were still on their way to New York, and the only good part about this storyline thus far was the fact that Daphne and Lily were apparently bonding. And Marvin is adorable.
Ted's list Lily discovered that Ted had a list of everything he wanted to do before he left New York, and he still hadn't told the others, claiming you don't drop something like that so close to a wedding. He insisted he was moving on, not running away, but she didn't see it that way. So what was on this list? He fixed graffiti from "your" to "you're," bought a round of drinks—no doubles—when the bar was practically empty at 10 a.m., said goodbye to the Empire State Building (and thought it talked back for a minute, only to discover a police officer wondering exactly what he was doing), and told his upstairs neighbor how he felt about her and her loud walking. He also came clean about April 26, the day he, not drunks at the drycleaner's, ruined Lily's dress for the rehearsal dinner while he and Marshall were reenacting "The Princess Bride." He had to wear an old-fashioned bathing suit and Marshall Packers' gear and a cheese hat to make up for it, but we think that drink he took of the scotch-chocolate syrup-ketchup-hand sanitizer was probably punishment enough. (Lily and Robin had their own sword fight, with Lily clearly knowing nothing about "The Princess Bride," and broke the $600 bottle of scotch Ted was planning on sharing with Barney and Marshall before the rehearsal dinner.)
In the end, Lily gave Ted a replacement bottle and explained why she helped him cover with Robin: "For a guy who loves New York this much, to leave it, you must really need to go." But she had some advice for him. Instead of saying goodbye to all the good things, he should say goodbye to the bad, like the heartache, the times he felt lost, the times it was a no instead of a yes. He should have a first scotch toasting to Barney's new life, not a last one. But when he went to do just that, Barney dropped a bombshell on him: He saw Ted and Robin at the carousel.
