"How I Met Your Mother" season 9 continued Monday, Dec. 16, with episode 12, "Bass Player Wanted," and clearly, the show wanted us to fall in love with The Mother. Plus, Andrew Rannells guest starred as the Devil, er, Darren, whose fiendish character helped the gang talk about some issues that have been brewing under the surface for a while.
Saturday 10 p.m., 20 hours before the wedding
Finally reunited This "HIMYM" episode saw Marshall get to Farhampton Inn, thanks to The Mother picking him and Marvin up as he attempted to walk it. Yes, Marshall was the third person to meet The Mother. After she had some fun freaking him out by correctly "guessing" his life story, she revealed that she too the bus with Lily. However, she wasn't planning on staying once she dropped him off at the Inn. The lead singer of her band, Darren, was the devil, who ruined people's lives for his own amusement, and he was even trying to kick her out of her own band. She had decided to quit instead, and after a chat with Lily – yes, she knew about the judgeship, as The Mother continued to be so entangled in their lives before even meeting Ted – stole Darren's (sketchy) white van.
However, because she was so nice, she was going to fill up the gas tank and get it washed before returning it to him. Marshall tried to talk her into confronting him, and in the end, she agreed to do just that. But her practice run with the bartender Linus didn’t go so well. (It didn't help she was knitting a hat for Marvin while trying to be intimidating.) Instead, she decided to go with Lily's plan for the weekend and ordered the Kennedy package.
The Devil's work As The Mother explained, Darren walked up to two friends, made them feel hilarious and adorable, found a flimsy connection, told a "personal secret" based on the tragic backstory of an animated kids film, found the one thing that would destroy their friendship, and sat back to watch it burn to the ground. He did that first with Robin and Lily – he told Lily that Robin sided with Marshall over the Italy/judgeship issue and brought up Robin's feelings about her maid of honor stealing the spotlight with her problems and of abandonment with Lily leaving to Italy – and then Ted and Barney as he found out about Ted moving to Chicago.
Robin explained that she wasn't on Marshall's side, but instead, she just didn't want to lose her best friend and gave her the MarshPillow to beat up to get her frustrations out. Barney couldn't believe his best friend was leaving the day after his wedding, but after he realized that with Marshall and Lily moving to Italy for a year, it would be them and Robin, he understood why. He needed a new start. Plus, Ted went out and stole a bottle of that $300 scotch, but as Ted was pouring it, Darren bumped into him, and the bottle smashed to the ground. Ted punched Darren.
The first drink After Ted punched Darren, Darren went inside, asked for ice because the best man had punched him, and quit the band. The Mother ordered a double of the finest scotch in the bar for the best man, and though they didn't know it at the time, that was the first drink Ted's future wife bought him.
Such a cruel tease… The very end of the episode saw Marshall apologize for missing the rehearsal dinner but telling Barney he did have a special gift for him, one that maybe should wait until after the wedding photos. With that, he raised his hand, and that final slap… was to be continued.
