"Smash" alum Krysta Rodriguez has landed a lead role in the upcoming "How I Met Your Mother" spinoff "How I Met Your Dad," Entertainment Weekly first reported on Wednesday (March 5).

The actress-singer joins Greta Gerwig ("Frances Ha") and newcomer Drew Tarver as leads in the new CBS comedy that's reminiscent of "HIMYM" but from the point of view of a female character, Sally (Gerwig), and revolving around a new group of friends in New York City.

Sally is a female Peter Pan who has never grown up and has no idea of where she’s going in life. After breaking up with her husband of less than a year, Sally finds a solid circle of support in her friends and family.

Rodriguez will play Sally's best friend Juliet, the most successful fashion blogger in the country. She is described as a "sexy, flamboyant force of nature" who is secretly delighted when her best friend breaks up with her "boring" husband. Eliza Dushku ("Dollhouse") was reportedly in the running for the part.

Before landing the role of Ana Vargas on Season 2 of NBC's short-lived series "Smash," Rodriguez starred in various Broadway musicals, including "The Addams Family," "In the Heights," "Spring Awakening," "A Chorus Line" and "Good Vibrations." Her other credits include the film "The Virginity Hit" and a guest spot on "Gossip Girl."

Tarver was previously cast as Sally's other best friend and roommate from college who is now married to her brother.

The pilot for "HIMYD" was written by Emily Spivey and "How I Met Your Mother" creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas.
