How homeschoolers can obtain CPS services

Maybe you're homeschooling a child who has special needs or perhaps you discovered your child has challenges or a disability after you began homeschooling. If you need access to services, i.e., speech therapy, occupational therapy, or even extracurricular activities, you can obtain them through the Chicago Public Schools (CPS).

Per the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), homeschools in the state of Illinois are classfied as private schools.  The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires that public schools attempt to locate private school students who have special needs and provide services to them.

Contact your neighborhood school and submit a written request to the principal requesting a global evaluation. Once you've done this, the school has 60 days to complete the evaluation and inform you of available services.

If you need assistance with initiating the process, email me at perfect.scribe@yahoo.com.
