How healthy is beer?

So you like your beer but how much do you know about beer in terms of your health.

We think that beer has calories and the calories must be written on the label even if it is not a lite beer. The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau governs beer manufacturing and labeling. Most people think it is the FDA. It is not required by law to add the calorie content unless it is a light beer. The amount of alcoholic content is governed by the state so it can differ from state to state. Scary isn’t it?

While we are on the topic of calories many people think that all light beer is under 100 -150 calories. This is incorrect. There could be as little as a 20 calorie difference between light and regular beer or it could be a 100 calorie difference; so be vigilant of this.

On a good note beer and wine are fat free. Beer has protein, potassium, folate, vitamin B12, and selenium but only in very small quantities and the calories in beer make up for the absence of fat.

Two regular beer has about the same calories (300-400) as a double hamburger, slice of pizza, or other fast food favorites. If you are dieting beware.

The higher the alcohol content of your beer the more the calories. There are 7 calories for every gram of alcohol. Even though beer does not contain fat it has about as many calories as fat. it goes without saying, if you are trying to diet you need to reduce your alcohol intake.

Light coloured beer does not have less calories than dark beer; it depends on the alcohol content and not the colour.

Men should not drink more than two alcoholic beverages; including beer, per day. Women should not drink more than one 12 ounce beer or a 5 ounce glass of wine but not both.

Beer has more calories per serving than 80 proof liquor or a 5 ounce glass of wine.

Remember the classic beer belly can come from the extra calories in beer but it can come from consumption of any foods with excess calories.

To end on a good note, drinking beer has been associated with having a lower risk for kidney stones. Though not known for sure it has been theorized the reason is due to beer having a diuretic effect because of the high water content.
