Never let it be said that the city of Ft. Wayne didn't do their part to keep down the "Unwanted Pet Population". As most of us that have pets know, we need to keep our animals vaccinated and tagged. Depending on what kind of domestic pet we have, we have to take them to the vet for their rabies vaccine every 1-3 years. But were you aware that the fee associated with the pet registration / license is made up to avoid and overflow of unwanted pets? If you check the City of Fort Waynes website (see link at the bottom of the article) you will see the list of fees for licensing. Registration is only $5.00 for altered pets. Very reasonable if you ask me. The fee for unaltered pets is $100.00, which to some may seem extravagent, but makes a lot of sense if you really think about it. If you have to spend $100.00 every year, per pet just in licensing and you are NOT a permitted breeder the fee really isn't worth it. Therefore charging such a large fee for unaltered pets makes owners think twice about getting their pet altered (spayed or neutered) and can reduce the amount of unwanted pet pregnancies. When you reduce the amount of unwanted pet pregnancies you reduce the number of unwanted animals and therefore reduce the number of animals that end up in the shelter and ultimately euthanized. Great concept right!
Another great reason to keep your pets license up to date is the convenience the license provides in getting your pet home if he gets lost. This helpful information is available 24 hours a day, even if your veterinarian's office is closed.
So a big Thank You to the city of Ft. Wayne for thinking ahead and doing their best to keep down the unwanted pet population.
