I can't tell you how many times I have driven past the Fabiolus Café on Sunset Blvd and thought to myself, "I should try that place out sometime." In all seriousness, I'm pretty sure I said it out loud a few times to myself as well. Well, only six years and probably 200 drive-bys later, that "someday" became this past Monday. Located at 6270 Sunset Blvd, The Fabiolus Café sits among a bustling strip of businesses along Sunset, making it a perfect place for those close by to escape the office for a quick bite to eat.
I don't know about you, but having the word 'Fabiolus' in your restaurant's name (no matter how it may be spelled) is going big in my book. Not only are you setting yourself up for easy mockery, you're also setting your diner's expectations pretty high. Reminiscent of when a friend talks up how fantastic a movie is, leaving your expectations ridiculously high that by the time you do see the movie it never honestly lives up to all the hype your friend has given it. With this in mind, I approached Fabiolus Café with as little expectation as possible and was pleasantly surprised.
Fabiolus Café has a quaint ambience and a simple charm. Pictures of famous Italian dishes and people scatter the walls and the colors are warm and inviting. The place is small, yet has many layers, if that makes any sense at all. The front entrance is indoors. Directly behind it there is a closed in patio that gives you the feeling you are outside, yet not. Behind this area lies the outdoor patio which gives patrons the option to enjoy that total Californian outdoor café feel if desired. We chose to sit in the middle section seeing as it seemed to be the best of both worlds and this was the most popular area to sit, at least during the lunch hour while we were there.
Fabiolus Café's menu offers a great selection of Italian favorites including panini sandwiches, antipasti dishes, fresh salads, gnocchi and other pastas of course. Playing it smart, we took notice of the other diners dishes around us and quickly realized the portions were nothing less than hearty. We split one of the gnocchi dishes but seeing as none of them came in a red sauce, we asked if we could make some changes to the dish and this was no problem. Our waitress, Marissa was easy going and friendly giving the entire dining experience an A+ in my books. The food was satisfying, the service accommodating and the atmosphere was delightful. So, the big question of the day…was the restaurant experience fabulous? Well, if you're looking for all the bells and whistles and to be waited on hand and foot, this place isn't going to reach your high expectations. If however you're like me and looking for great food at an affordable price with friendly service, Fabiolus Café will indeed be a fabulous fit for you!
