Budinger had a similar injury last season that caused him to miss more than four months.
Last year, Budinger had his torn meniscus repaired in surgery. This time around, Budinger had the damaged portion removed by Dr. James Andrews. The Wolves and their medical staff took a different course this time in hopes of reducing the recovery time and the risk of re-injury.
The Wolves said they will wait and see how Buddinger knee responds to the procedure before bringing him back into the lineup.
So, how does the Budinger’s injury affect the Minnesota Timberwolves 2013-14 season?
While Budinger’s injury probably isn’t as devastating as it was last season when he along with several others -- Kevin Love, J.J. Barea, Nikola Pekovic and Andrei Kirilenko -- missed extended periods of time, his versatility and three-point shooting along with his ability to move without the ball will undoubtedly be missed. Buddinger averaged 9.4 points and 3.3 rebounds last season. He shot 41.4 percent from the field and 32.1 percent from beyond the arc, both career lows, For his career, Buddinger shoots 35.8 percent from beyond the arc
"From Chase's perspective and ours, it hurts a little bit," Team president Flip Saunders said on Sept. 27. "But it's opportunity for other players." Saunders added "It doesn't really change what we do, what our goals are and where we go as a team."
The players who will likely see increased playing due to the injury is second-year Derrick Williams, veteran Corey Brewer and first round draft pick Shabazz Muhammed. Williams, who mostly played power forward last year, went through rigorous workouts this summer to drop about 20 pounds and help him become quicker and more agile to play small forward.
Willams had an up-and-down rookie season as he averaged 12.0 points and 5.5 rebounds a game, while shooting 41.2 percent from the floor and 26.8 percent from beyond the arc.
Brewer, who signed with the Wolves as a free agent , averaged 12.1 points in 24.4 minutes per game with the Denver Nuggets last year. While not the shooter that Budinger is, Brewer is very athletic and gives the Wolves a reliable winger defender.
