How did Earl Grey tea get its name?

See also

Earl Grey Tea is one of the oldest and most popular mixes in all of tea history. Many times when drinking this blend the question has arisen, where did this tea get its name from?

Surely there must be an Earl of Grey somewhere, but who exactly was this man, and how come he got a tea named after him? There are several different versions of where the name came from so here are the two of the most common versions.

The first story is that a Mandarin child was saved by Lord Grey while visiting China, however it has been proven that Lord Grey never did visit China.

The official story from the Grey family states that the bergamot tea was blended to suit the water from Howick Hill. This bergamot flavor was chosen to offset the lime in the local water.

Although the history of this tea might always be on people's mind perhaps it is a story that is best left to talk about over a nice cup of tea.
