Take away the fame and fortune and you'll quickly find that celebrities are just like the rest of us, tossing and turning as they struggle to overcome the same sleep issues and disorders that we confront nightly.

The growing prevalence of sleep disorders among today's elite Tinseltowners may even be having a nefarious economic impact on Hollywood.

According to a recent survey among entertainment industry film and television professionals, talent-related "health issues" are now the leading culprit of production delays, setbacks, and longer work days.

"If they're not sleeping well they're performing well," a former talent agent was recently quoted in a HuffPost report. "When you're sleep deprived, you can't remember lines. You look like hell and it's harder to shoot. So sometimes you can't. The impact on budget is astronomical from this."

Oscar-winning actor George Clooney recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he has trouble falling asleep without the TV on. "I'm able to numb out," he said about the blue glow.

Although it may seem like the TV is conducive to the fast-track to sleep, the sleep cycle is actually thrown out of whack by the light emitted from the television screen. Additionally, the human brain focuses on changes in volume of ambient sounds – regardless of how subtle - even during sleep.

That could account for Clooney's trouble staying asleep. “Without question, I wake every night five times," Clooney says.

Rapper Eminem spoke with Complex Magazine about his sleeping problems close to a decade ago, saying he was so busy on tour that medication was required to help knock him out, especially on airplanes.

"It drove me insane," he told Complex in 2006. "I just medicated myself to death."

Eminem later checked in to rehab as a result of this problem and to get help.

In the world of sports entertainment, professional wrestlers now have a closer relationship with sleeping pills than steroids, a dangerous situation that is prompting many athletes to find non-medicinal alternatives for their sleeplessness.

Former WWE superstar and current TNA headliner Chavo Guerrero, Jr. illustrated his awareness of the importance of quality sleep last summer with a tweet to his 300,000 followers.

"Just woke up to @sleepgeniusapp what a difference from that stupid alarm clock beeping," he wrote. "Great new technology."

Guerrero is referring to Sleep Genius. Developed by experts in neuroscience, sleep, sound, and music, Sleep Genius came to market last year on iOS and Android following years of research that is now delivering to the bedroom the same technology used to help astronauts overcome insomnia in space.

Retired professional boxer Jessie James Leija has also publicly boasted about the app. "If you have trouble sleeping download this app and sleep like a baby," Leija tweeted. "It works great!"

Lady Gaga, unfortunately, is yet to find what works for her. In fact, when it comes to sleep deprivation, she’s a long-time sufferer. "My passion is so strong I can't sleep -- I haven't slept for three days," she told OK! Magazine in 2010. "I lie in bed and try to pray and breathe. I have a very overactive mind."

Although Lady Gaga always manages to "muddle through," countless top performers - from Usher to Mariah Carey - have postponed concerts and other appearances due to exhaustion born of severe sleep deprivation.

“Ultimately, it doesn’t matter whether you are famous or not, failing to get the sleep you need can have serious life-threatening consequences,” explains a report from Valley Sleep Center. “Researchers have established a link between lack of sleep and obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and increased risk for certain cancers. If you are struggling to get the sleep you need to safeguard your health, talk to your doctor, practice good sleep hygiene, and make sure you aren’t doing anything to sabotage a good night’s sleep.”
