Yes, Matthew Broderick is back and playing our beloved Ferris Bueller. In 1986’s Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Ferris ditched school, borrowed his friend’s car, got his girlfriend excused from school, went to a Chicago Cubs game, joined a parade and high-tailed back home before his parents went to make sure he had recovered from his fake illness.
That was 28 years ago and yet, millions remember the movie. Millions more will see the Honda commercial featuring Ferris again and a spectacular car jump over an unfinished bridge. This will be a success because Ferris Bueller himself was a success. He ditched school, enjoyed an almost perfect day and got away with it.
How many of us who were in high school or college could relate to the guy who “could not handle school on a day like today”? It strikes a positive cord 28 years later. Whoever can leverage the positive image of Ferris Bueller will surely see great results.
Enter Honda Motor Corporation. With an ad nobody has seen in full and a game five days away, Honda has scored a major success. I just googled ferris bueller super bowl ad and received 47 Million results. The ad is a success. It may be more successful than the game. My Google search for “New England Patriots” netted only 42 Million results. That’s right, the pending commercial is more popular than one of the game’s participants.
Rest assured sports fans…the game is not always good. Field goals can get boring. Just wait for the commercials and hope you are not invading the guacamole when Ferris Bueller takes over your TV. How can you handle a (potentially) boring football game? Ferris Bueller to the rescue…
