Scientists have studied beet juice for its blood pressure lowering properties in the past. A newer study shows that the juice increases endurance and stamina by converting the nitrates in the juice to beneficial nitric oxide that fuel the body. The researchers say they were “amazed” at the impact beet juice had on physical stamina and endurance among cyclists included in the study.
According to Study author Professor Andy Jones of the University of Exeter's School of Sport and Health Sciences, “Our study is the first to show that nitrate-rich food can increase exercise endurance. We were amazed by the effects of beetroot juice on oxygen uptake because these effects cannot be achieved by any other known means, including training. I am sure professional and amateur athletes will be interested in the results of this research. I am also keen to explore the relevance of the findings to those people who suffer from poor fitness and may be able to use dietary supplements to help them go about their daily lives."Beet juice could potentially help less physically fit individuals.
Nitrate rich foods are known to be beneficial for good health because they improve blood flow. Drinking a daily glass of the juice has been found in past studies to keep blood pressure lower for twenty-four hours. The study concluded the juice from beets could be as beneficial as some blood pressure lowering medicines.
Beet juice increased endurance and athletic performance in the cyclists because it also reduced the rate of oxygen consumption, providing more energy. Other nitrate rich vegetables include celery and radishes, green beans, carrots, squash and spinach.
The researchers gave cyclists 500ml daily of beet juice for six days before they were tested for cycling endurance. A second group received a juice cocktail containing black currant to compare results. Cyclists given the juice had lower blood pressures, in addition to two percent better times it would take to cover a set distance. Lower blood pressure readings were also attributed to the beneficial nitrates in the beet juice.
