How animals perceive time

How do you explain time to an animal? The first step is understanding that humans use linear time, a concept we created to organize our lives.  Animals on the other hand, not only live within the rhythms of the natural world, but they mainly immerse themselves in the present moment.  In other words, human time has little significance to them.

But let’s say you wanted to communicate to your animal that you are going away today, but will return tomorrow.  While your pet may not understand the concept of twenty-four hours, you can mentally send a picture of nighttime transitioning into daytime.  If you will be away for four days, send your animal this sequence four times followed by the emotion and image of your arrival home. Visualizing the weekly phases of the moon or a sequence of full moons can help an animal understand a longer period of time.  Animals also respond when you send them images and feelings of the changing seasons.

Sometimes it may seem like an animal is telling time, when for example your horse waits for you by the fence or when your dog anticipates a family member’s arrival home by standing at the door.  But they are not looking at the clock - it is their internal telepathic sense informing them of your approach.

Animals may not be able to distinguish the past from the present especially when they have experienced an abusive or frightening situation. Acknowledging what the animal has gone through and then using intuitive techniques separating the animal from the past event can lessen their anxiety.  This can give them a sense of peace in the present moment and can heal the root cause of a fear-based behavior.

Many of our pets awaken when the sun begins to rise and not when our alarms go off.  They have an internal clock directly linked to the Earth’s pulse.  If possible, it is best for your animal’s schedule to correspond with nature’s timetable.  We as humans should be as conscious as possible about our affect on the natural cycles and cadence of domestic and wild animals, and how we can best respect these rhythms in our beloved pets.
