Katie Chen, co-founder, left and May Hui, founder Catch Matchmaking
A Los Angeles company that brings together single executives has lessons for other businesses on how to focus on a target market and develop a unique selling proposition.
Catch Matchmaking could be pegged as another “dating service.” But the Los Angeles company which is entering its 3rd year has learned many lessons in being different than the competition.
I recently interviewed founder May Hui:
How did you choose your target market – executives - instead of “everyone” who’s single and looking for a mate?
We chose to help busy, professional singles and executives, because when we were working in the corporate world, as women moving up the corporate ladder, we understood first hand how tough it was to meet people outside of our company pool. We knew that in order to be a successful single in LA, you need to increase your social circle.
Your CATCH Concierge Service differentiates you from similar services. What other differentiating factors are there?
The CATCH Concierge is an exclusive service for our clients and it is included with each of our matchmaking services. Once the match is approved, we take care of all the details for you: date, time, place, everything. Other differentiating factors include: our Date-By-Date Membership, Singles Events, exclusive women's group Matchmaking Circle, selectivity, and our interview process.
What are the key reasons for your business success: customer service, business networking, defining your target audience, other reasons?
Building relationships with everyone we touch everyday. We do our best to be consistent at our networking functions so we are "top of mind" when a contact comes across a single person. We do a great job with getting to know someone outside of the networking environment as well, taking the time to have coffee or exchanging information with them. Another key reason for business success: using social media to keep in touch with the younger generations. Text messaging is very helpful to expedite communication with our clients and eventually generate referrals from friends and family.
