Recently our little first-grader came home from school with an info packet from our local Boy Scout troop. Before I even opened the bulky package my son was excitedly rattling off all the points that I'm sure he had listened to, captivated evidently. Smart little whipper-snapper that he is he quickly switched to selling me on the many camping trips we would attend. I love camping. Any excuse to go camping is fine with me. I was hooked.
There was one issue, however. A very large and personal issue. The Boy Scouts of America have recently passed legislation that allows gay members, excluding leadership positions. Personally, I really don't have an issue with the homosexual community, as far as being a decent human being goes, just s long as everything remains decent and appropriate when in certain company. Like children. I wasn't so sure that I wanted my son in this organization now.
Homosexual behavior is a sin in the eyes of God. Personal feelings aside, I must uphold the values of my Lord. In the past I must say that I have played an active role in attempting to preach to the homosexual community about the 'error of their ways'. It wasn't until recently that I learned perhaps I was was the one in error. I saw a broadcast from Dr. Charles Stanley that touched on the Curse that we are all under. And I had an epiphany. We are all born under the Curse. No, this was not new knowledge to me, but it allowed me to understand the Grace that we need to extend to all of creation. Just as God had for us.
So, my son is a tiger scout. So there are gays in the Boy Scouts. No I don't agree with it, but, Jesus doesn't agree with all the things I do, and He has let me in the Kingdom. Everything happens for a reason. And maybe the reason here is Grace. Sharing the Grace and Love of Christ. We were all locked into our own sins before He found us where we were at. He never said anything about any of my them. He just forgave me and loved me. How can I not do the same?
