On Friday, Houston broke a record with the earliest snowfall ever recorded. The National Weather Service continued a Winter Storm Warning in Houston and surrounding areas for accumulating snow, and 1-6” is expected around the Houston area on Friday. There's a 60% chance of precipitation in the morning around the Houston area, and increases to nearly 100% in the afternoon.
Rain, freezing rain, sleet, and hail have been reported and are expected around the Houston area throughout the day. Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport reported slight snow at 8 am. Emergency officials are expecting icy roads after sundown tonight, when a 12-hour freeze period will begin and continue Saturday, creating black ice.
The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning for more than 20 Texas counties, including Chambers, Galveston, Brazoria, Matagorda and Jackson, extending north through Harris, Montgomery, Fort Bend, Wharton and Liberty counties, then moving as far northwest as Bryan and College Station and as far northeast as Trinity and Polk counties.
The earliest snowfall date for Salt Lake City is September 17, 1965 when 2.2” fell on the city, according to City Data.
