Cooking healthy meals takes a bit of planning but is worth the effort it requires for optimal nutrition and taste. Healthy meals mean not only choosing healthy foods but choosing healthy cooking methods as well. Grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables can be prepared in ways that preserve nutrients while enhancing flavor and eliminating excessive fat, salt, and calories. Even delicious desserts can be healthy when prepared the right way.
The Mayo Clinic staff offers a list of healthy cooking techniques including baking, braising, broiling, grilling, poaching, boiling, roasting, sauteeing, steaming, stir-frying, and the use of herbs and spices. Many of the recipes we have grown up loving can be modified a bit to create healthy dishes while preserving good taste.
Healthy recipes for every type of diet can be found all over the internet but the Lymphoma Research Foundation has teamed up with Memorial Hermann Cancer Center - Southwest to bring Houston residents a healthy cooking demonstration and tasting event using cancer-fighting foods free of charge on September 12, 2013.
This demo will be held at 7600 Beechnut Street, Houston, Learning Center, Medical Plaza 2 with networking at 6 pm and the program from 6:30 pm to 8 pm. Cooks will demonstrate four recipes using super foods and then distribute these recipes so that attendees can prepare them at home. Although the event is free, pre-registration and RSVP is required with Jen Torres, Regional Chapter Manager, at email@example.com or call Memorial Hermann's Call Center at 713.222.CARE (2273).
