Draft Day Decision makers: Houston Texans

We can go ahead and call this the Denver Broncos connection. General Manger Rick Smith was hired from the Broncos in 2006, and 2010 will be his fourth draft with the Houston Texans. Gary Kubiak also came from the Broncos coaching staff and although his background is in offense, three of the four first round picks made during his tenure have been defensive players. They will be joined in the Texans war room by Director of Pro Personnel Brian Gardner, Dale Strahm their Director of College Scouting, and of course their full complement of College scouts.

2009 NFL draft one year later: Houston Texans

Is there a better grade then perfect? I mean, we are talking about a team that used the 15th overall pick to select the eventual 2009 Defensive player of the year. We are also talking about a team that added two quality pieces that helped them go from 22nd in yard allowed in 2008, to 13th in 2009. The Texans got solid pieces with almost every one of their picks, and injury hurt some of their year one production. A year ago I was very high on the 2009 Texans draft, sitting here a year later I feel a lot better about it.

What should the Houston Texans do with their first round draft pick?

When we take a look at theHouston Texans primary needs, and factor in how most draft pundits have the first round shaking out, we see that the Texans will have a very good chance to address any one of their three primary needs.

What are the Houston Texans needs heading into 2010?

The Houston Texans stat line from 2009 suggest that it is that time for the Texans to spend their first round draft pick on a top level running back. They ranked 30th in rushing yards per game with 92.2, and 31st in yards per carry.

Fix the Franchise: Houston Texans edition

The Houston Texans, the last team to not make the 2009 NFL playoffs. They are also probably the easiest to fix, because the team feels like a team that is one great player away from contending for their division title, and making the playoffs. That great player likely will take the form of a running back.  I think the Texans are one great running back away from being a playoff team. While they have other needs I would start at the RB spot.

2009 NFL season in review: Houston Texans

Alas we come to the last team that failed to qualify for the 2009 NFL playoffs. The Houston Texans are a tough team to figure out. They seem to be a whole lot better on paper than their yearly record indicates. Of course playing in a division with the Indianapolis Colts is not exactly the easiest way to get into the playoffs. At 9-7 this was the first winning season in Houston Texans history, and if they continue to get better, as they have over the last few years, they will be in the playoffs very soon.

Cushing makes strong bid for Defensive rookie of the year

Brain Cushing has had a very good rookie campaign with the Houston Texans. He entered Sunday’s contest leading his team with 102 tackles. Against the Seattle Seahawks he defended TE John Carlson, holding him to 24 yards. He also recorded 10 tackles, six unassisted, three for a loss and a sack. For the year he has 112 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. Given those numbers Cushing very well could be the 2009 NFL Defensive Rookie of the year.

Matt Schaub continues to have growing pains as a NFL QB

Matt Schaub is in his sixth NFL season, and his third as the starting QB for the Houston Texans, and it seems he is still growing into his job. After spending his first three season as the backup to Michael Vick with the Atlanta Falcons Schaub came to the Texans as their second franchise QB in team history. While his play on the field is at times a little erratic, Schaub has reached an important milestone already in 2009. Schaub played in just 11 games in each of his first two seasons with the Texans. This year he has already played in 11 games and has not yet succumbed to injury.

2009 Houston Texans Draft Analysis

The Houston Texans, who went 8-8 in 2008, and had the 15th overall pick in the first round, were in a very unique position. A lot of the glamour, high impact players had already been selected, and at 8-8 this team isn’t good enough for one player to tip the scales, so the Texans have to be very smart in their selections and look to find more pieces for which they can build around.

2003 NFL draft pick by pick: #3 Andre Johnson

The Things bout top 10 draft picks is they should come in and make an immediate impact for the team that draft them. How good of a pick was Andre Johnson for the Houston Texans? Well it might be the finest pick made by this organization in its short history, and may just be among one of the best draft picks ever made.
