Houston Tea Partiers show diversity within movement

In an effort to combat the mainstream media's narrative that the Tea Party is largely white and racist, FreedomWorks has launched a national campaign called "Diverse Tea." The aim of the campaign is to highlight the diversity within the Tea Party movement.

“If you actually take the time to get to know the people in the Tea Party movement, you see an amazing amount of diversity- not just different skin colors but people literally from all walks of life that have united around the idea that the government is too big and is spending too much money it doesn’t have,” commented Matt Kibbe, President and CEO of FreedomWorks.

Of the first four Tea Party members to sign on to the new campaign, two are from Houston. Outspoken former Houston NAACP chapter president Rev. C.L. Bryant, and "Contract From America" author Ryan Hecker.

Bryant left the NAACP because he didn't like the way the group used race to push a liberal agenda. Once a self-proclaimed "Democratic Radical" he now believes the leftist policies he once championed have led to the destruction of the black community. Bryant is also partnering with FreedomWorks on a documentary called "Runaway Slave" aimed at causing African-Americans to question their allegiance to the Democratic Party.

Hecker is a Houston area lawyer who created the "Contract FROM America" project. The 10-point contract of principles was chosen after hundreds of thousands of people voted for their favorite principles. Unlike the 1994 "Contract With America" spearheaded by Newt Gingrich, Hecker's contract was created from the bottom up by everyday people.

Bryant and Hecker both spoke at the 9/12 Rally in Washington, DC last Sunday.
