On Friday, August 16 Pro Basketball Talk reported that Rockets GM Daryl Morey wants to experiment with Dwight Howard at the power forward position. This all happened during a Reddit session with NBA fans. This is an idea that was inevitable once the Rockets said they would not “trade” Omer Asik. If the Houston Rockets go ahead with this plan, they will be changed forever.
On the surface, this moves makes sense. For one, Asik is bigger than Howard and has a better post game than Howard. Teams just feel the need to dump the ball down into Dwight Howard. Defensively, Asik’s size is also a factor and he’s more than an adequate shot blocker. With Howard, they would combine as toughest frontline in the paint. However, they’d also be the worst free throw shooting frontline in the NBA.
How would this move shake up the rest of the team? Last year, Houston was flying up and down the court. While the ball was mainly in James Harden’s hands in an attacking style, would the big lineup deter the Rockets from using a transition game? The size would automatically make them slower.
How will Dwight Howard react to this news? If he isn’t happy with playing the four, this lineup will never work. It would be wise for Houston to not force it. Once that situation happens, Omer Asik would be relegated to the bench. We all know Asik doesn’t want to come off the bench anymore. Chances are Asik is moved before the season is over if he isn’t contributing to the team.
