Houston restaurant landscape is crowded with St. Thomas alumni

After meeting Domenic Laurenzo and his father Roland, both graduates of the local St. Thomas High School, at the media lunch at their new El Tiempo on Navigation the other day, I was reminded of all of the Houston area restaurants owned or begun by alumni of that school.

Here is a hopefully accurate and mostly complete list:

  • Birraporetti’s
  • Carrabba’s
  • Damian’s
  • El Patio
  • El Real
  • El Tiempo
  • El Tiempo Market
  • Gatlin’s Barbecue
  • Grace’s (coming soon)
  • Little Bigs
  • Laurenzo’s
  • Mandola's Deli
  • Mia’s
  • Nino’s
  • Patranella’s
  • Pizzatola’s
  • Pronto
  • Ragin’ Cajun
  • Reef
  • Vincent’s

Plus some well-known establishments long since shuttered or sold off:

  • Altenburgers
  • Felix
  • Frankie B’s
  • Monterey House
  • Ninfa’s
  • Pesce
  • Rudi’s
  • Snuffers
  • State Grille
  • Stella Sola

It is impressive, and quite interesting, that the second best of the local all-boys Catholic high schools has produced so many successful restaurateurs. One possible reason might be an excellent home economics program.
