Houston group to hand out shotguns in high-crime neighborhoods

A graduate student is handing out shotguns in neighborhoods ravaged by high crime rates in Houston. What could possibly go wrong?

University of Houston graduate student Kyle Coplen founded the Armed Citizens Project to put claims from pro-gun and pro-gun control groups to the test. The NRA crowd believes more guns will lower crime rates while the gun control crowd believes fewer guns lower crime.

To test these claims, the Armed Citizens Project is handing out 20-gauge single-shot shotguns to families in areas with high crime throughout Houston. The group claims the shotguns are useful for home defense.

As part of the program, all applicants must pass a background check, attend a safety and training program, and have lived at least one-year in their current address. These standards are tougher than most laws governing shotguns in America.

The group will record crime rates as reported by the police department throughout the project. The data will be compared to other similar neighborhoods without issued shotguns.
