This is the first installment in the series, Houston Culture for Families with Teens, that will highlight some local goings-on that are especially appropriate for the teens in the family. Teenagers are so immersed in the culture of their peers, that they often do not (and are not encouraged) to take part in more diverse and wonderfully enriching events in their immediate surroundings. Houston offers impressive cultural choices year-round, and those activities provide meaningful and memorable experiences for parents and teen to share. So commit to exposing your family (even the hesitant teen) to more of Houston's diverse cultural smorgasbord-- starting here...
Houston Museum of African American Culture's Africans in America: The New Beat of Afropolitans
HMAAC is the newest jewel on the Houston museum scene. WIth a new building strategically situated in the Musuem District a stone's throw away from the Holocaust Museum, the new Asia House and the Children's Museum, HMAAC is already garnering national recognition even before it's doors officially open. [Go HERE to see what CultureMap has to say about HMAAC]
The museum's current offering, the Africans in America Symposium is about up and coming young African artisitic powerhouses. It celebrates the rise of a new cultural influence, brought to America and the world by a wave of fascinating young and creative cosmopolitan African immigrants, so called "Afropolitans." Events kick off Friday, September 9th through the 10th.
