In a span of eight minutes in the first half, the Laredo Heat's Matthieu Braem received two yellow cards ejecting him from the match and Houston's Alex Lopez scored his first Dynamo goal leading Houston to a 1-0 win in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup competition. Despite scoring for the first time since May 17, 2014, the Dynamo's MLS scoreless streak remains intact at 389 minutes.
Midfielder Servando Carrasco starting his second consecutive match for Houston nearly struck for the game's opening goal when his point blank shot was deflected just wide in the 12th minute.
The Dynamo scratched out the game's lone goal when forward Omar Cummings burst into the box luring Laredo keeper Jorge Ortega off his line before laying off to Alex Lopez who lifted a chip shot over the out of place Ortega.
Houston then held the man advantage for 11 minutes before Dynamo keeper Tyler Deric was issued a red card evening the playing field for the remainder of the match.
The Dynamo missed additional scoring opportunities to put the game away in the final fifteen minutes of play. Andrew Driver was stopped twice in the 76th minute, forward Will Bruin's attempt in the 81st minute sailed wide as did Jason Johnson's in the 85th minute.
The win comes at a team when Houston has had a difficult time scoring and winning as they enter the World Cup break.
"Absolutely, it (the win) gives us confidence going into the break," said head coach Dominic Kinnear. "
Houston faces the San Antonio Scorpions June 24th or 25th in the fifth round of the U.S. Open Cup before returning to MLS action on June 29, 2014 when they travel to Montreal, facing the Impact in a 6:30p.m. CDT start.
